DECADENT ILLUSTRATORS
SERIES OVERVIEW:
This series attempts to showcase material by artists whose work might be described as 'decadent' in its style or subject matter.
It does not intend to give anything other than the briefest of biographical overviews (though references for such are given within each entry). It instead aims to present a short selection of illustrations which are either typical of the artists work or perhaps illustrate a text or theme that falls within the remit of the series.
We welcome suggestions or contributions to this ongoing series.
STEFAN EGGELER
Ewers fans will know of Eggeler, by reputation at least, for the macabre etchings he did for Ewers short story 'Hearts of Kings'. This has recently been republished by Joe Bandel here.
I am once again indebted to that excellent blog Journey Round My Skull (now operating under the name 50 Watts) for hosting some of his other equally strange images; these are from Meyrinks 'Walpugisnacht'. Both he and I have found only one biographical note on him at www.artoftheprint.com which sadly does not like being linked from here.
It has recently come to light that he was joint editor of a journal in Vienna called 'Kokain - Eine Moderne Revue' which ran for five issues in 1925. Sadly only three issues seem to exist of this incredibly rare magazine. Their covers are below.
I have also added, some sadly poor quality images, from his 'Plague' series.
This is another artist I would welcome any more information on, especially if anyone has a bibliography of his portfolios.
